The Gospel Precedes The Law - The Promise, Then The Law
Col 1:3-14; 1Tim 2:1-2; Rom 11:33-36
What is the central part of the wedding?
The minister’s pronouncement or the covenantal vows made by the couple to one another.
Marriage bookends the whole Bible
- Recap of early parts of chapter 3
The Mosaic Law has been a problem for some people in that they believe that it is by keeping the law they are saved.
V6 “He believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. Understand then, that those who believe are children of Abraham.”
It is by faith alone, in Christ alone by grace alone. - Our text today v15 to 18. Human and God’s covenant
Paul compares the normal legal view of the covenant with God’s covenant
The theme of the covenant is one of the BIG themes that runs through the whole Bible. Old Covenant and the New Covenant - The Promise is made to one of Abraham’s “seed” and not many other “seeds”
According to Paul and Matthew Jesus the Messiah-king is that special “son of Abraham”
In other words, the Promise first or the Gospel and then the Law contra to common view. - We too are Abraham’s children and heirs of the Promise
So, this is a good reminder that the Promise, the Gospel precedes the Law. Furthermore, we who have simple faith and trust like Abraham are reckoned as righteousness; we have been acquitted, declared righteous, not guilty for the man Christ Jesus stood as a substitute in our place and bore the penalty for our sins.
