Freed For Others, Not For Self (Fruit of the Spirit)
Galatians 5:13-22
We live in a DIY age; do it yourself
No solo Christians
Jesus sends the Second Advocate, the Holy Spirit
Today’s text falls neatly into TWO sections: first one a short one and the second one a bit longer. Freedom in Christ continued and Life by the Spirit or Life in the Spirit.
- Freedom in Christ
V13 “You, brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather serve one another in love.”
V14 “The entire law is summed up in a single command: love your neighbour as yourself.” - Life by the Spirit
Live by the Spirit, being led by the Spirit, bearing the fruit of the Spirit, keep in step with the Spirit.
a. Live by the Spirit
Be led by the Spirit
Do not gratify the desires of the sinful nature
b. The acts of the sinful nature
V19 “The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies and the like”
The fruit of the Spirit
V22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
V24 “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”
