Love Your Neighbour As Yourself
The first four commandments unpack how Israel’s knowledge of their God should shape their relationship with him. The next six unpack how that knowledge should shape our relationship with other human beings. Jesus himself would summarise and uphold this part of the law in this way: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’.
In love, God had drawn near to his people to make himself known to them and bless them. The purpose of this is so that God’s people may follow God’s example. For in love, they shall draw near to their neighbour to make God known to them and bless them, resulting in praise toward God. This is the focus of the second division in the ten commandments.
Laws For A Free People (vv.12-17)
These commands are a vision of what life is going to look like in God’s promised land for the people whom God set free from slavery in Egypt. God’s people are to start learning to live that way now in anticipation that God will surely lead them into it. So that the moment they enter and take possession of the land, they may make God known to the people around them as the people God has redeemed for himself.
But we know that Israel by their stubborn hearts would not obey these laws. For these laws can only be obeyed in their fullness by free people. And while Israel had been set free from slavery to Pharoah, yet they had not been set free from slavery to sin. Israel by their sinful nature could not obey these laws either now or upon entry into God’s promised land, and for the entirety of their stay in that land.
So these ten commandments were not the end of the story for God’s people. They were pointing forward to an even greater act of liberation in Jesus Christ, so that God’s people would be truly free to fulfil the requirements of this law.
Making God Known to our neighbour
The commands directed toward our neighbour are the way we make God known to our neighbour. The commands are to be obeyed now, but they look to the future of living in God’s place. Obey God’s word now by faith so that you may enjoy the fullness of God’s blessing when he brings you into God’s place. By obeying these commandments, this is how God’s people are to be God’s kingdom and priests; God’s treasured possession.

Baptism Service
Our next baptism service will be in late Q1 2023. Further details will be published closer to the date.
Individuals wishing to baptized or confirmed should get in touch with Ps Jose and must apply in writing to the ESCCC Board of Elders (info@esccc.org.au).
Individual classes for men and women wishing to be baptised or confirmed at ESCCC are run as needed throughout the year. These cover the matters of personal faith, church membership and public testimony over the course of three sessions.
All baptism and confirmation candidates also participate in two group sessions in the two weeks leading up to the baptism and confirmation service, presenting their testimonies and learning about the baptism and confirmation service liturgy.
Every Friday night from 8-9pm we meet over Google Meet and Sunday morning 9:00-9:30am over Zoom or in-person at church.
Electronic Giving
We give to what we love. Due to the restriction of our physical Sunday meetings as a loving precaution against the spread of COVID-19, we will not be able to collect a cash offertory as usual. Electronic giving instructions can be found on the Giving and Offerings page.
Missions Support
In support of God’s mission, we encourage all members to give regularly to the ESCCC Missions Fund, according to your means. The EFT details can be found on the Giving and Offerings page.
The Missions Fund will be allocated by the Missions Committee to bless ESCCC and our Mission Partners in missions work.
